A conference was held on Tuesday at the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center conference rooms in order to discuss the rising incidents of violence between boyfriends and girlfriends at the secondary school level, namely junior high and high school.
The conference was attended by social workers from in and around the South Texas area as well as a diverse array of entities who work daily to prevent such issues. It was reported that similar conferences will be held on the campuses of schools in which this type of violence is occurring.
Onesimo Martinez who works at the Wintergarden Women's Shelter stated that they have been receiving more and more cases of violence between boyfriend and girlfriend in our schools where, more often than not, the boy is lashing out against a girl in order to deny her of her liberties as a single young girl.
He also added that the message is focused on educating young students so that they know how to avoid these types of situations as well as to recognize and be able to diffuse these types of cases. It is important for them to know that when they see these types of abuses, there exists no love, therefore these types of relationships are not healthy and should not continue.
He also went on to add that the advent of the Internet and social networking has caused violence within these couples and has resulted in unwelcome aggression against these couples. There are even cases in which one of the two parties forces the other to inform them constantly of there whereabouts, which also takes away the liberty of the person involved and is equally wrong.
He went on to report that one in every four students in schools know of a situation such as this that is occurring to one of their classmates. This is a serious problem and it requires that Shcool officials, families, counselors and the different sectors of society get involved to prevent the violence in these young relationships.
