Press Release
The City, through its Criminal Investigation Division, is currently concluding a thorough investigation for credit card abuse and theft. Our initial investigation has revealed and we allege that a staff member illegally used a city fuel credit card for his personal benefit and for the personal benefit of others. This staff member has been terminated and the City will pursue prosecution to the fullest extent allowed, which we expect to include restitution. In addition, our preliminary investigation revealed that an estimated $68,000 of city owned funds was misappropriated by this former employee and his conspirators. We believe that other suspects (not employed by the City) participated with this particular staff member in this criminal activity. Arrests will be forthcoming.
Although not involved in the criminal activity, disciplinary action has been taken against other staff members for failure to follow policy, which established "checks and balances" for the use of these cards.
These "checks and balances" would have uncovered the misuse in its initial phase. The City is deeply saddened by this incident. Administra-tion has always taken great pride in maintaining a high level of fiscal responsibility, as is evidenced by its strengthened financial position over the past several years. We remain resolute in our commitment to the community and will work diligently to ensure that we can eliminate any future misuse of public funds.
