Washington, DC – Congressman Francis-co “Quico” Canseco (TX-23), a strong supporter of Texas farmers and ranchers, issued the following statement announcing that Maverick County has received a disaster designation related to drought in 2011 from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). A disaster designation makes agricultural producers in the county eligible for assistance from USDA.
“In 2011, Texas experienced one of the worst droughts on record. The severity of the drought left farmers without crops as they burned up in the field because of a lack of rainfall and required ranchers to sell off livestock because of a lack of food and water for their animals. Simply put, hard-working farmers and ranchers lost the ability to make a living because of Mother Nature. While agriculture is inherently a risky business, and farmers and ranchers know the risk of adverse weather is always there, the severity of the drought overwhelmed the normal risk management tools available to them, like crop insurance for farmers and rain insurance for ranchers. I’m pleased that the USDA has given Maverick County a disaster designation, as it will provide qualifying agricultural producers much-needed assistance in these tough times.”
