Brenda Carrillo, a graduate of Winn High School, has been awarded a scholarship by the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation.
Carrillo received the R. J. Kidd Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000, payable the first year of higher education. The R.J. Kidd Memorial award is given to students who have participated in the University Interscholastic League Academic State Meet, compiled an outstanding record of academic and extracurricular achievement, and plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin. This scholarship is in memory of the founder of the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation (TILF).
This year the TILF awarded 452 new scholarships and will renew approximately 188 multi-year awards for a total of 640 scholarships being distributed during the 2011-12 academic year, with value of approximately $1.2 million. Recipients must attend any approved college or university in Texas.
Carrillo competed in spelling and vocabulary at the 2010 and 11 UIL Academic State Meets. She was active in National Honor Society and participated in UIL band and various community service projects throughout her high school career.
Carrillo plans to attend The University of Texas at Austin and major in English.
