LAST FRIDAY:
C.C. Winn (14-4) and Eagle Pass High School’s varsity base- ball teams met on the
field last Friday with the Eagles (12-6) coming out vic- torious 2-1. Friday’s game
was a closely contested match as neither team committed any errors. The Eagles scored both of their runs in the third inning and the Mavericks acquired their lone tally in the fifth.
EPHS ‘s Devon Torres (five and a third innings) only allowed a single hit while Reliever Marcos Segura (one and two thirds innings)
recorded the save. Coming through at the plate for the Eagles were JD Diaz (3-for- 3), Javy Cardona (2-for-2, two doubles), Eric Ruiz (1-for-3, triple) and Danny Flores (1- for-3).
Jose Padilla acquired the Mavericks’ only hit. Jose Rendon and Steve Cantu split the pitching duties for the
Mavericks. CCWN concluded its
District 29-5A season in sec- ond place while EPHS fin- ished third.
“Winning that game was huge, especially after they previously beat us 10-0 in five innings (on April 1),” EPHS Head Coach Reynol Mendoza said. “Our boys wanted redemption and we also need- ed to win to stay in third place. Our boys just showed up, did not make any defensive errors and our two pitchers only allowed one hit.”
Though the Mavericks were disappointed in not win- ning the district title, CCWN Skipper Kevin Laughlin quickly readjusted their atten- tion.
“I just reminded the guys that we are still playing in the postseason for the first time in team history and need to for- get about whatever happened in the past whether it be non- district or district,” Laughlin said on Tuesday. “Right now we just need to focus on the
playoffs and the guys have responded pretty well yester- day and today in practice.”
