Eagle Pass High School’s varsity base- ball team stood in third place in District 29-5A
following their win against Laredo Martin and a loss to Del Rio late last week.
The Eagles (9-6 in dis- trict) beat Laredo Martin 9-7 on Friday. EPHS garnered thirteen hits and only com- mitted a single error. Eric Ruiz went four for four, including a double and a triple. JD Diaz went two for four. Devon Torres went two for four. Gilbert Villalobos was the winning pitcher andMarcos Segura recorded the save.
“We hit the ball good in that game, but so did Martin who kept coming back at us,” Head Coach Reynol Mendoza said. “We got off to a 6-0 lead, then Martin made it 6-2 while we had a couple of errors. We moved it up to 7-2 and then one of Martin’s batters hit a three- run homer to put it at 7-5. We scored two more runs to make it 9-5, and they scored twice more before Mark Segura came in for us and shut the door on Martin.”
The Eagles, however, lost to Del Rio 5-0 on Saturday.EPHS belted six hits but committed four errors. Kevin Ruiz was the leading hitter going two for three.
“We outhit Del Rio but made some base running mistakes,” Mendoza said. “We had one of our runners thrown out at home plate for a third out, another picked off at third base for another third out in a different inning, and another guy picked off at first base for the second out. We had four errors which cost us three runs.”
Both Laredo Martin and United were nipping at the Eagles’ heels at the start of this week. Mendoza broke down the figures for playoff contention.
“Five out of the ten teams in our district already have nine losses,” Mendoza said. “We have six, Laredo Martin and United each have seven and they are both tied for fourth place. Laredo Alexander is in second place with three losses and C.C. Winn is in first place with two. The teams that have nine losses, their only hope of making the playoffs ismathematically.” EPHS was in control of its
own destiny headed into its game against Laredo Nixon this past Tuesday.
