C.C. Winn High School’s varsity baseball team (first place in District 29-5A)
clinched its first playoff berth in team history and put some distance between themselves and their second place opponents following victories over Laredo LBJ and Alexander late last week.
“They (Mavericks) were extremely excited about our program taking the next step,” Head Coach Kevin Laughlin said.
The Mavericks (13-2 in district) defeated Laredo LBJ 3-1 on Friday. C.C. Winn scored two runs in the second inning and another in the fourth. CCWN acquired five hits and committed a single error.
Three pitchers took the mound for the Mavericks with each striking out multiple batters. Jose Padilla dismissed ten batters in five innings. Jose Rendon turned away three batters in one inning. Thomas de la Cruz closed things out by striking out two batters in the last inning.
From the plate, Jose Padilla went two for three and batted in a run. Xavier Lopez also brought in a run. Jose Rendon went one for three.
“Against LBJ we played solid defense and our pitching was excellent, Jose Padilla was on that night,” Laughlin said. “Our offense didn’t play very well, we were struggling at the plate, hitting the ball right at people, but we still managed to put together three runs which was more than enough to beat LBJ.”
The Mavericks improved their chances of winning the District 29-5A title by beating second place Laredo Alexander 6-2 on Saturday. C.C. Winn scored a run in the fourth inning, two in the fifth and three in the sixth. CCWN acquired eight hits and committed two errors.
Jose Rendon (winner) struck out nine batters and only allowed four hits while pitching a complete game.
Thomas de la Cruz went two for three and batted in a run.
