Warriors End Season on ‘Winn’ing Note; 9-5 vs. Rebels

The Winn Warriors and Coach Jose Luis Galvan’s Robert E. Lee Rebels squared off on Wednesday in the final game of the 2011 EPPARD Division II baseball season, a season which has been marred by questionable calls by PARD officials, shortened games, sanctions, protests yet the Warriors continued on with a never- say-die attitude by Winn players, parents and coaches. Whatever the case, your Cardinal Connection Warriors laced them up one more time to face the Rebels. In the first inning, Aaron Olivares reached on an infield hit, followed by a single up the middle by Max Garcia. Ricky Longoria loaded up the bases with a hit, which set the stage for Diego Ibarra to drive in the first two runs of the game with a single right back up the middle. Mando Villegas’ fielder’s choice scored Longoria to make the score Warriors 3, Rebels coming to bat.
Although they weren’t Coach Sergio Angulo’s Rebels of yesteryear, the Rebs would attack early as well as Luis Alfonso Fernandez singled, Mario Galvan flied out to Ibarra in front of the Rebel bench, and Jose Alonso Fernandez drove in his brother with an error on the first baseman. Adam Suke also reached on an error by the center fielder to score Fernandez to make the score Warriors 3, Rebels 2 after one complete inning of play.
Rudy Botello started things off in the second with an infield hit, Elian Montemayor hit a shot to center, which took a bad hop and went to the fence. Olivares drove in Botello with his second hit of the game and Max Garcia brought in Olivares and Montemayor with a drive to right center. Ricky Longoria kept the drive alive with a triple to left and then DiegoIbarra hit his third triple of the season, a blast to right field to drive in Longoria. Mando Villegas hit yet another triple to drive in Ibarra with the 9th run for your Winn Warriors.
The Rebels came up empty in the bottom of the 2nd as Mario Galvan skied a fly to Chava Alvarez at second to end the inning leaving Sebastian Perez and Moises Villarreal stranded on the base paths. The Warriors also left bases loaded in the top of the 3rd, then in the bottom of the 3rd, with time running out, your Robert E. Lee Rebels came back with runs by Jose Alonso Fernandez, ...
