Eagle Pass High School’s varsity boys and girls golf teams competed at the District 29-5A meet held at the Casa Blanca Course in Laredo this past weekend. The Lady Eagles qualified as a team and Daniel Venegas punched his solo ticket to compete at the Region IV Meet which will be held in Edinburg on April 18 and 19.
On this year’s Lady Eagle golf team are Brianne Costilla, Leyla De La Cerda, Mendy Rhodes, Sophie Olivarez, Tish Esparza and Hilda Morales (medalist).
“The girls making it to region came down to the wire at district,” Head Coach Leonardo Escobar said. “We were down by eleven strokes with my third female golfer (Brianne Costilla) coming
up. Costilla ended up beating her opponent from Laredo Alexander by fourteen strokes so she really catapulted us past Alexander into making it to regionals.”
Escobar’s bunch knew they had their hands full after taking a very narrow lead on the opening day of competition.
“After the first day, we were leading by one stroke,” Escobar said. “We went into the second day knowing no lead was safe and struggled a bit.”
Prior to district, the Lady Eagles have successfully thrown down this season: winning the San Antonio Invitational and placing at meets hosted by Laredo Nixon (second), United (second), Del Rio (third) and at the Border Olympics (third).
Daniel Venagas (who finished second individually) also scored an invitation to the Region IV Meet while the Eagle boys golf team came in fourth at district. Also teeing off at the 29-5A meet were Pedro Gomez, Daniel Aguirre, Hector Cruz, Eric Elizondo and Manuel Diego.
“Daniel is a very consistent golfer, he shot a 75 and a 78 during on the first two days of the district meet,” Escobar said. “The second day of the meet can be stressful and the race was tight for Daniel on day-two.” EPHS’s boys golf team,
before district, has com- peted well throughout the season coming in second at a meet hosted by San Antonio Independent School District, and placing third at meets hosted by Laredo Schools Nixon and United.
“This year has been a super successful one,” Escobar said.
