C.C. Winn High School’s varsity baseball team beat Laredo Cigarroa 10-0 in six innings on Friday and kept a solid grip on first place in District 29-5A with an 11-1 conference record. The Mavericks scored three runs in the first inning, four in the second, two in the fourth and one in the sixth.
Jose Rendon mowed down Cigarroa by striking out 14 of their batters while only allowing two hits.
“Cigarroa loaded the bases in the first inning as
Rendon’s pitches were all over the place but then he settled down and prevented them from scoring a single run,” Head Coach Kevin Laughlin said. “Rendon only gave up two hits in the first inning and that was all Cigarroa would end up getting.”
Juan del Bosque went four for four and batted in three runs. Chris Cabrera went two for two and brought in two runs. Porfirio Ruiz went one for one and batted in a pair of runs. Jose Villarreal went one for three and brought in a run. Going one for three were Xavier Lopez and Thomas de la Cruz.
“We scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back,” Laughlin said.
“Our batters were simply on fire, once we got ahead of Cigarroa 6-0, the guys decid- ed to put the game away.”
Coming through for the Mavericks with their glove work (1.000 fielding percent- ages) were Jose Padilla, Steve Perez, Del Bosque, Ruiz and De la Cruz.
At the start of this week, the Mavericks were on the verge of earning their first playoff berth in team history.
“For the kids it would be huge.” Laughlin said. “This is what we have been preaching since we started the program five years ago and all of the hard work by the players and us coaches is making those aspirations come true. We have come this far by establishing a good team
through pitching and defense which will help us win district and move on into the playoffs.”
The Mavericks have had plenty of supporters backing them up this season.
“The support from the parents this year has been both awesome and overwhelming,” Laughlin said. “We have had record numbers of crowds consistently coming out to support us and they will lineup as the players come out of the dugout which means a lot to the kids that the community is
