Five was the magic number, at the start of this week, for Eagle Pass High School’s varsity baseball team whose District 29-5A record slipped to 7-5 after the Eagles lost to Laredo United 9-1 on Friday.
“We have six district games remaining this season and in order for us to lock in a playoff spot we have to win at least five,” Head Coach Reynol Mendoza said on Sunday.
EPHS has flip-flopped at times this season.
“We have been off and on as we have made some defensive mistakes on the field,” Mendoza said. “Our pitching has also struggled against some of the top teams in the district which makes things more difficult for us. Our hitting has also been lacking at times so hopefully we can turn things around soon.”
The Eagles stomached a tough two-week stretch
before heading into their game against Laredo United South this past Tuesday.
“We lost to C.C. Winn pretty bad, bounced back against Laredo LBJ but then lost to Alexander and United,” Mendoza said. “So we have had our troubles against the top teams in our district and United is still a contender. We just have to beat everyone else remaining on our schedule to earn one of the four playoff spots.”
EPHS does not have the luxury of taking it easy right now as the 29-5A playoff race has become more cut- throat especially now that Laredo United (who had seven of their district wins forfeited a few weeks ago) has been on a five game winning romp.
“United is very capable of running the table and making the playoffs,” Mendoza said. “They could finish district 11-7 and definitely make the postseason.”
Mendoza, however, reit- erated that his boys just need
to take care of their own business.
“We just have to stay focused on making the plays,” Mendoza said. “Physical errors on the field are going to happen but you still need to consider your second options on defense which is part of the mental aspect of baseball.”
The Eagles visit Laredo Martin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
