Eagle Pass High School’s varsity softball team won the District 29-5A title (their fourth in the past five years) by blasting Laredo Martin 15-0 in three innings last Friday. In the process, the Lady Eagles extended their unbeaten district record to 14-0.
“Against Martin, our team performed exceptional- ly well and took care of business right off the bat,” Head Coach Oscar Ruiz said. “We are repeatedly playing hard this season and not taking any team for granted.”
Ruiz considered starting his reserve players against the Lady Tigers, but then opted not to.
“I thought about starting my role players but I changed my mind at the last minute,” Ruiz said. “I began the game with my usual starters and once we took the lead, established ourselves by scoring eight to ten runs right away, I put in my subs and they did exactly what they were supposed to.”
With both the district title and a postseason berth in hand, the Lady Eagles are now eyeing a bigger prize.
“Winning district was the first goal we wanted to accomplish at the beginning of the season and we have,” Ruiz said. “Now we are headed into the playoffs and our ultimate goal is to play for the state championship. We have a very good chance of going far this season, like I have always preached, and our team is more than capable of making it happen.”
The Lady Eagles host Laredo Nixon at 7 p.m. on Friday.
