Eagle Pass High School’s varsity softball team maintained its District 29-5A record a perfect 12-0 and stood in first place after beating Laredo United 6-1 on Friday. At the start of this week, EPHS was four games ahead of Laredo United South (8-4).
The Lady Eagles, however, know the value of avoiding complacency.
“It is very important to stay focused on what we are doing, take one game at a time and hopefully we can finish our district schedule still on top,” Head Coach Oscar Ruiz said. “We want to win out the rest of our games and make the playoffs, our main concern is advancing to the next level. We know the playoffs will be very tough no matter what area we end up in.”
EPHS will have a tougher trek while facing all of their 29-5A foes for the second time this season.
“It gets a lot tougher, especially when you are in first place,” Ruiz said. “When you’re on top, everyone wants to get a piece of you. After playing you the first time, an opponent will try and make some adjustments, while also recognizing some of your players, which makes the second round of district tougher.”
Ruiz knows every adversary in 29-5A has their sights set on beating his bunch.
“For some teams, beating the district leader becomes the highlight of their season,” Ruiz said. “So we cannot take even the lowest seed in our district lightly because beating us will make their season.”
EPHS has accomplished its unblemished conference record through solid play.
“The girls are just playing sound fundamental softball, we’re doing the little things on the field that some other teams take for granted like bunting and getting on base,” Ruiz said. “Our focus is on scoring one run at a time, we chop the tree down one strike of the axe at a time. Our defense is playing outstanding right now, our pitching has also been consistent and our hitting has been producing in every game.”
