Eagle Pass High School’s varsity soft- ball team held an unblemished league
record of 8-0 and stood atop of District 29-5A after squashing Del Rio (11-1) in five innings on Monday, Laredo Nixon (15-0) in three innings on Tuesday and Laredo Cigarroa (11-1) on Wednesday. The Lady Eagles fell behind early (1-0)
then busted the game wide open in the fifth inning.
EPHS rotated three pitch- ers against the Lady Toros; game winner Lizzy Montalvo, Samantha Fuentes and Samantha de Leon.
Head Coach Oscar Ruiz explained the main reason why his team is currently rolling.
“The number one thing we are doing is working hard in practice, we’re taking things very seriously,” Ruiz said.
“We preach and bleed defense, which I think will help us go a long way this season.”
The Lady Eagles have been taking no prisoners ever since being eliminated at the Border Olympics pre- season tournament held in Laredo a few weeks ago; a tourney they had consecu- tively won the previous four years.
“From the time we lost against Laredo United South, we made a promise to
ourselves as a team that we would take no one for grant- ed for the rest of this sea- son,” Ruiz said. “Our atti- tude since that loss to United South did a 180-degree turn around. Before that we would have some off-prac- tices but now we consistent- ly have good practices and some of the girls are even staying on their own after- wards working on the little things. One thing I will tell you about this team is that there are a lot of characters, a
few of our players had become a little spoiled after playing on some travel- ing teams, but now our lead- ers are helping us get down to business in practice and at games,
