State planning new railroad bridge in county

Unbeknownst to county leaders, the Texas Rail Road Commission has begun to plan ahead for a possible coal mining operation in our area by finalizing plans for a new rail-way in the coun- ty. The new railway would allow for direct access from the Dos Republicas mining operation north of the city to Mexico, where most of the coal will be heading. The new rail-way would circumvent the current rail crossing into Mexico, there- by lessening any exposure of coal to the city. The pro- jected railway was unknown to several key members of the city and county committee present at
this week’s meeting in Austin, according to at least one source present. Both the City of Eagle Pass and Maverick County have remained steadfast in opposing the project citing environmental and health concerns for our region.
