CBP may take active measures at border crossings

The killing of one ICE agent and wounding of another in the interior of Mexico on Tuesday has done nothing to quell the growing concerns by the US government over the safety of their field operatives. Such is the concern that at least one source has confirmed to this publication that governmental agencies are looking at taking extreme safety measures along the border. The anonymous source goes on to say that a possibility may be to reduce bridge traffic to one lane or close traffic alto- gether. Although the latter response seems unlikely, the signs may be point- ing to heightened security at all International Ports of Entry, including Eagle Pass. Richard Pauza, a spokesman for the CBP, said he was not aware of any closings and has received no word of any potential closings. “ U.S. Customs and Border Protection always operates at the highest level of vigi- lance. Ports of entry remain open and we remain steadfast in our efforts to keep our country, our law enforcement personnel and our communities safe” said Pauza.
The two ICE agents were gunned down on Tuesday in broad day- light south of San Luis Potosi, Mexico in what has been the most daring attack on US agents so far. Janet Napolitano of the US Department of Homeland Security released the following state- ment, “Let me be clear- any act of vio- lence against our ICE personnel – or any DHS personnel – is an attack against all those who serve our nation and put their lives at risk for our safety. The full resources of our Department are at the disposal of our Mexican part- ners in this investigation. We remain committed in our broader support for Mexico’s efforts to combat violence within its borders.”
