Eagle Pass High School’s varsity football team won their District 29-5A opener by defeating Laredo LBJ 21-14.
Jose Rodriguez hauled in a 25-yard pass from Tommy Galvan for a touchdown during the Eagles’ opening drive. Rodriguez threw a 30-yard scoring strike to Hector Gloria in the second quarter. Galvan connected with Wally Martinez on a 30-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
Head Coach Tom Gonzalez said winning the first conference game was a huge boost in momentum.
“It was big, winning the district opener does help a lot as far as building confidence before you go into the next game with a ‘W’,” Gonzalez said.
One area of concern for Gonzalez are his team’s miscues - which the Eagles have repeatedly duplicated this season - that kept the score close on Friday.
“It was close, but we made a lot of mental mistakes,” Gonzalez said. “We shot ourselves in the foot a lot. We fumbled three times, and lost the ball on all of them, and we committed penalties during critical situations again, we had too many penalties.”
Gonzalez knew his boys were going to have their hands full with an LBJ team that spent the previous two seasons in District 31-4A; which is located in the Coastal Bend area.
“LBJ played hard and we expected a tough game from them because we know they are a much improved team,” Gonzalez said. “LBJ is a very experienced ball club with most of their starters playing varsity since their sophomore year, so this is the year for them because they are losing a lot of key players after this season. Everyone is thinking LBJ’s players are pushovers, and they are not, but they will be someone to contend with in this district.”
Eagle Pass hits the road and drops in on Laredo Alexander at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
“We have to play error free ball because Alexander is very good at what they do,” Gonzalez said. “Alexander is another one of those groups that has most of their offensive starters back from last year, ten out of eleven I think. They are a quick and fast bunch so our offense will have to get it together also and keep down their mistakes.”
