Uvalde, TX -- The August 31 retirement of two of Rio Grande College’s most prominent faculty members leaves the College with both a legacy to uphold and new directions to chart as the College continues to diversify and provide greater access to learning programs.
The retirement of Dr. Frank W. Abbott ended a 25-year tenure during which he oversaw the growth of Rio Grande College from an unsteady infancy to a full-fledged modern institution highly ranked for the quality of its teacher education programs and inclusion of communications technologies in the learning process. Dr. Abbott arrived in 1985 to become the first dean of RGC’s predecessor, the Sul Ross State University-Uvalde Study Center and remained at that post until he suffered a stroke in November 2008. As he recovered Dr. Abbott remained at the Uvalde campus where he was charged with researching and writing a history of Rio Grande College. Dr. Terry Carson, former Chair of the Business Department, now serves as RGC’s Academic Dean.
Dr. Barbara Tyler, who chaired RGC’s high-achieving Education Department since 2003, ended her 40-year teaching career on August 31. Dr. Tyler became head of the Education Department at a time when the College was at risk of losing its accreditation because of low teacher certification test grade averages. In short order, she and her faculty were able to raise the passing rate of the exam to a consistent 99 to 199 percent average, one of the highest success rates for teacher certification in Texas. Over this period, RGC became recognized as one of the state’s top producers of bi-lingual educators.
