Although this election season is already garnering attention from the community, it is not the Hospital District or Commissioners Court that has gained the most interest from candidates, that distinction belongs to the EPISD Board of Trustees. An unprecedented 13 candidates will appear on November 2nd’s voting ballot, making this school board election the most contested in years. According to election officials there are currently 13 candidates registered for the school board election in November. Seeking posts in place 2 of the board will be Ingacio Saucedo, Marcos Villalpando, José Reyna and Mark Garcia; Garcia will be seeking a seat to a new post and not his interim post of place 4. Back in the folds are Alfonso Nevarez and Lupita Fuentes who stepped down from their positions in 2009; the news that both Fuentes and Nevarez are seeking reelection after stepping down for personal matters has raised more than a few eyebrows locally. Also seeking the place 4 posts are Ana Gonzalez and Ernesto Saucedo. Gunning
for place 5 are Lupita Fuentes, Jesus A. Perez and Fuentes’ political rival, Abel Sanchez. Fuentes was replaced by Beatriz Garza after stepping down last year; Garza will not participate in the election. Current trustee Glenna Purcell will face off against Evererdo Ballesteros and Hector Chavez in place 7. Although the 2010 school board election is months away residents can expect to see heavy campaigning from both the county and the city. The school board has been known to be one of the most important posts as it is a future stepping stone to a political career.
