The secretary of Public Works and Transport of Coahuila, Horacio del Bosque Dávila, and the mayor of Piedras Negras, José Manuel Maldonado, died in a plane crash over the dam "La Fragua" this morning from what appears to be pilot error. Reports of the plane crash were broadcasted in Mexican news stations throughout the day. It is presumed the Bosque and Maldonado were being flown over areas affected by the recent flooding. The state's governor, Humberto Moreira Valdés, confirmed the deaths of the state officials and the mayor during a morning press conference. At least six other individuals were onboard the aircraft at the time of the accident.
Eagle Pass and Maverick County officials received word of the incident and held a press conference this afternoon. “ We had several opportunities to speak, we had great conversations on benefits that would be for both areas, working on issues that would benefit both communities” said Mayor Cantu who had met with his Mexican counterpart several times during his administration. “It’s truly as sad day” added the Mayor. The municipal government was scrambling to fill the leadership position after the news of the accident was received. The position may now go to the “Primer Regidor” according to our local mayor.
The scene at the crash site could only be described as organized chaos as throngs of Mexican reporters attempted to near the wreckage. This however, was next to impossible after it was discovered that the aircraft was downed in an area of heavy brush and little access. The only access to the crash site was on a raft. The only other “non-officials” at the scene were employees of a Piedras Negras mortuary which were seen carrying two body bags onto the crash site. The other victims were identified as Ricardo Garza Bermea, David Chavirra, Juan Roberto Rendon, Guillermo and Alfono Berchlemann and Guillermo Ibarra.
