Although city leaders were expecting some opposition to the idea of a smoking ban in Eagle Pass they were seemingly caught unaware at the 75% approval that was registered earlier this year through an anonymous poll. The poll was conducted through the city’s website and although it is not expected to be 100% accurate, it does show public sentiment for this cause. Pushed forward by Daniel Tijerina of the City of Eagle Pass’ Planning and Zoning Department, the ban would focus on public establishments like restaurants and enclosed areas. Tijerina has become the champion for this cause and stresses the harmful effects second hand smoke can have on children, the elderly and those with medical problems.
Although no decision has been taken on the ban, it is believed that the informal poll will play a major role if brought before City Council. The ban would designate outdoor areas for smokers and would set a specific distance from the non smoking clientele. Opposition to the ban will be expected from restaurant owners who will take the biggest hit from separating their client base. Eagle Pass however, is one of the last cities in South Texas to adopt a smoking ban in public places; other cities such as San Antonio, Austin, and Laredo have had such measures in place for years.
