It has been said that the only truly American art forms came about with the invention of Jazz music, if this is the case than its cultural compliment would be Mariachi music. Luckily for those at Monday’s EPHS band concert, they were treated to both of these musical genres. The Mighty Eagle band held its annual Mariachi and Jazz night concert in which they showcased the talents of dozens of high school students. Under the direction of David Solis, John A. Munoz, Greg Cavazos, Korina Meza, Maribel Morin and Roberto Rodriguez, the proud parents, faculty, friends and staff were treated to songs such as “No Me Queda Mas,” “Que Bonita Es Esta Vida” and long time Jazz standards such as “Caravan.” The band program prides itself in not only succeeding year after year in UIL band performances but introducing its students to the music of American and Mexican cultures. This commitment to the importance of cultural music is evident in the amount of time the EPHS band directors spend honing the talents of each student; each student brings a specific set of talents to the group. The Mighty Eagle Band will take a short hiatus after returning from their summer trip but promises to return with a powerhouse show for the coming marching season.
