Local law enforcement and emergency first responders took part in a two hour workshop yesterday morning to address the state of emergency preparedness in Eagle Pass. Held at the Ft. Duncan Hospital, the workshop was presented by the Texas Department of State Health Services and addressed the very real threat of shortages in medicine stockpiles in the eventuality of a terrorist attack. Known as the Strategic National Stockpile or SNS, the plan is intended to rush medications and medical supplies to areas affected by a terrorist attack or natural disaster.
The SNS would be used after a bioterrorist threat such as anthrax botulism or smallpox dispersal over a populated area. The SMS would then get to work to control the spread of the biological agents. The workshop addressed all aspects of a bio hazard attack, from media information to volunteer training and liabilities ,and served to orientate all local personnel in the event of a terrorist attack. Conducted by regional SNS coordinator William Lydon, the workshop was attended by Texas DPS officers, EPFD and local medical personnel.
