C.C. Winn High School’s varsity volleyball team has an almost completely new roster this season. Head Coach Corina Benavidez only has two starters back from last year’s roster - Caridad Garcia and Abigail Gonzalez.
The Lady Mavericks went 6-12 last year in District 29-5A while competing against Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Laredo Alexander, Laredo Cigarroa, Laredo LBJ, Laredo martin, Laredo Nixon, Laredo United and Laredo United South.
A statewide athletic district by the University Interscholastic League (back in February) lightened up the 29-5A lineup by sending Cigarroa, Nixon and Martin to 31-4A.
CCWN, meanwhile, is focused on developing its young roster.
“We are a new team, gaining experience through tournament play,” Benavidez said.  We need to get ready for district. Girls are adjusting to the varsity speed of the game.
Benavides, who is entering her fourth year as the Lady Mavericks head coach, is also concentrated on making her team more cohesive.
“Teamwork,” she said. “All of the girls are working together and helping each other out on the court. Togetherness.”
The Lady Mavericks will indeed have to work together if they want to contend for a postseason berth and advance out of 29-5A for the first time in team history.
“Our district is always competitive,” Benavidez said. “We can't take any team lightly and the girls need to take it a game at a time.”
CCWN’s two seniors - Caridad Garcia and Abigail Gonzalez – will be looked upon to anchor the team.
“They are both Seniors and the captains of the team,” Benavidez said. “Caridad is doing a fantastic job in the middle position. She is looking forward to a great season. She is hoping to continue playing at the collegiate level.”
At press time, CCWN was 3-1.
The Lady Mavericks recently defeated - 25-20,25-23, and 25-18.  CCWN also recently went 2-1 at a tournament held in Edgewood. The Lady Mavericks lost to Sam Houston (10-25, 25-18, and 14-25), then rebounded by defeating Memorial (22-25, 25-20, and 25-18) and bested Fox Tech (25-16, and 25-11).
Assisting Benavidez this season are Patricia Pete Rodrigues, Sarah June Gonzalez and Erika Rodriguez.
